Put your thinking caps on and grab a pen or pencil. The Georgia Municipal Assocation is holding an Essay Writing Contest for Georgia 6th graders. The essay subject is "If I Were Mayor, I Would...". The deadline is on March 5th, 2010. Essays may not exceed 350 words. One winning essay will be selected from each of GMA's 12 districts. Winners will receive a $250 savings bond and other prizes. The winners, along with their parents and and a teacher, will be recognized at an awards luncheon during April, 2010.

Clayton County Library Designing a New Teen Web Page

Teens in Atlanta's Southern Crescent have a chance to give their input in the redesign of the teen page on Clayton County Library's website.

Right now, there's an online survey available at http://www.claytonpl.org/teen that will be up until January 31, 2010. (It's also printed out and available in the Young Adult area of each of branch.)

On February 17th at 7pm teens are invited to the Library HQ and discuss the results of the survey, look at some teen sites that other libraries have created, and generate ideas about how to make the new website fun and useful. No registration is required, but please call the library if you plan to attend. They want to make sure they have enough FREE FOOD. City of Fayetteville Accepting Donations for the Mayors' Christmas Motorcade 2009

The City of Fayetteville, GA will be participating in the Mayors' Christmas Motorcade, a program that started in 1958 in GA to raise awareness for the needs of Georgia's mental health hospitals. Fayetteville donations will go to the West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Residents, schools, churches, businesses and civic groups can participate in this worthy cause by donating new and unwrapped gifts which will help the patients living in mental health hospitals in Georgia.

Deadline for donations is December 2nd.

A collection box will be available for donations at Fayetteville City Hall, 240 South Glynn Street, Fayetteville Fire Department, 95 Johnson Ave. and Fayetteville Police Department, 760 Jimmie Mayfield Blvd.

2 Pumpkin Carving Contests - Win Great Prizes, Including Braves Tickets

This is a great weekend to get your pumpkins and begin carving them. There are two contests you can enter with one pumpkin so help your kids carve some cool Jack-O-Lanterns this weekend. Then enter your pumpkin for a chance to win prizes. There is an online contest through the Atlanta Braves. You can also bring your pumpkins to The Frederick Brown Amphitheater to be judged for their contest.

The weather is going to be perfect for attending Fayette County's first Apples & ArtFest event this Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). Nearly 40 exhibitors will be showcasing their arts, crafts, and specialties. The event is open to the public and there is no admission cost. Proceeds will benefit Fayette Senior Services, Meals On Wheels, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

With all the invigoration of a crisp fall day and the charm of a county fair, the event promises to be all that you and your family love about hometown festivals. In addition to the variety of exhibitors, there will be musical entertainment and dance exhibitions featuring Eddie Huffman and the McIntosh High School Chiefettes. Special features include fun and games at the Kids Apple COREner, the Granny Smith Memory Tree where attendees can support Meals on Wheels and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren by purchasing an "apple" in honor of a loved one, and the Apple-A-Day Healthy Living "Orchard".

Parent's Night Out - Fun for All!

Peachtree City Gym in Peachtree City, GA will be hosting its last Parents Night Out of the summer this evening Friday, August 7 from 6 pm-10 pm. The event is a fundraiser for Rising Starr Middle School Cheerleaders. The cost is $20 per child, $15 for siblings. It's not too late to attend.

My children, ages 6 and 8 have had a blast at two of the PNO's at Peachtree City Gym. I dare say, they've had more fun on their nights out than we did. They should probably call it "Kid's Night Out". The 8th grade cheerleaders and adult supervisors entertain the children all evening. According to my 8 year old, it's so much fun because they get to jump in the foam pit, climb the rope wall, and just have fun with friends. My 6 year old daughter loves when they play games like, "What time is it Mr. Fox?", "Four Corners", & "Duck, Duck, Goose". She also loves the interaction with the "big girls" who dote on her. My son probably won't admit it, but he likes that part too. When we picked him up last time he commented, "Those girls are so cute!" as we were pulling away.

Although this is the last Parent's Night Out of the summer, Peachtree City Gym and the Rising Starr Middle School Cheerleaders will be holding Parent's Night Out one Friday per month during the school year. Dates will be posted on LocalKidFun.com as well as the Peachtree City Gym website.

In her blog, Sue mentions that reading programs like this really motivate her boys. I have had the same experience with my kids. I've used the local library reading programs motivate the kids. The library program rewards kids for every 5 hours they read. Reading time is logged in 20 minute increments. They love to fill in the boxes for each 20 minutes they read. It makes encouraging them to read easier. When they're bored, and I suggest they read a book, it's not just mom "nagging" them to read. I only have to mention the extra box they will get to fill in for reading and they rush to pick out a book from our reading pile .

I will definitely be signing my kids up for this program as well.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area will highlight Healthy Parks - Healthy Living with a summer splash. Enjoy a 6 mile family float down the Chattahoochee River to the Powers Island landing. After the float relax and enjoy live music and wildlife programs, visit the vendors and craft stations or take a self guided hike.

Coweta County Cobra Football & Cheerleading Announces Play for Free Program

I am constantly going through the pages of LocalKidfun.com to update it and make sure all the information is accurate and complete. While adding some new gymnastics and cheerleading programs on the Sports page and contacting each place to make sure their info. is accurate, I came accross PLAY FOR FREE offer from Coweta County Cobra Football and Cheerleading. What a great idea!

While registering your child in person for football or cheerleading, let the representative know you would like the "play for free" option. You will be issued discount cards to local merchants. If you sell enough discount cards to the public, CCCYFA will waive your registration fee. That's a $150 - $200 savings, and your child will get to be a part of team sports. You must put your credit or debit card information down as collateral for the debit cards you will be trying to sell. CCCYFA will have full details at the time of registration and be able to answer any questions.

Coweta County Cobra Football & Cheerleading program is for ages 4-14. They compete in the Metro Atlanta Youth Football League (M.A.Y.F.L.). Local Youth Theatre Group to Perform Cinderella - June 13 & 14, 2009

One of my favorite discoveries in researching family friendly activities and events for LocalKidFun.com has been the access to quality family theater in South Metro Atlanta. Just go to the Family Theater page of LocalKidfun.com or view the monthly events calendar to see all that our area has to offer children interested in the theater.

The next local production you might wish to attend is Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella, presented by Backyard Kids Theatre on June 13th, at 7 p.m., and June 14th, at 3 p.m. at Heritage Christian Church in Fayetteville. Cinderella is the second show produced by student founded organization, Backyard Kids Theatre. The directors, musicians, cast, crew, costume advisor, choreographers, etc. are all youth aged 7-17. They look forward to amazing you with their fabulous talent.

Local - Mom's Night Out or Date Night Idea

I know this is supposed to be a blog about what to do with your kids. Let's face it though, we parents are the ones staying up late at night searching the web for ideas, answers, etc. And for all our hard work, we deserve a night out on the town.

Here's one idea for something fun, local, and over 21. (This would make a great date night or a ladies night out. Wish my mom was going to be in town that weekend. We would have fun!)

Regal Cinemas Announces Summer Free Movie Schedule

Once again, selected Regal Cinemas will offer free movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am during their Free Family Film Festival. It’s a fun-filled nine weeks of movies for kids and parents. All of the free movies are rated G or PG. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity.

8 Ideas for Keeping Kids Busy While Waiting in Line

Summer is almost near. While we dream of the perfect family vacation, the reality may be long lines or long car drives. Sometimes it's hard to find ways to entertain the kids away from the comforts of home. I have come up with a quick list of tips that will help you keep your kids happy and occupied, whether you're in a long line, in the car or the kids are just plain bored.

1. Teach your kids how to thumb wrestle. Remember thumb wrestling? It was loads of fun when we were kids. How to play: Wrap fingers of your right hand around the fingers of your opponents right hand, leaving your thumbs out; Chant "One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war"; Try to get the opponents thumb pinned down under yours. No using your other hand.

2. Play “I Spy, with my little eye”. The easiest way to do this is to say the color of the object. If you are playing this with younger kids, you can come up with different variations that enhance learning. For example, you can "spy" something that rhymes with ten (answer: pen), you can give extra clues to help them figure out what you are spying.

3. A great grocery store game is to try to find items for each letter of the alphabet. This can also be played on car trips or while waiting in line as long as you are surrounded by lots of letters.

4. Rhyming Games (think of all the words that rhyme with “bee”), think of as many words as you can that start with a certain letter.

5. Alphabet Categories. Think of a theme like first names and take turns thinking of first names for each letter of the alphabet. Once while waiting in a long line to get into a zoo, we tried to think of animals that started with each letter of the alphabet. That was difficult, but fun. Not sure if we finished before we got out of line.

6. Bring a pad of paper and a pen or pencil. Draw a squiggly line or a shape. Have your child finish the picture by drawing anything they want out of the mark you made. Then they can draw a squiggle and have you finish the picture. When you've finished your picture that they started, you can ask them what they would have made from the squiggly line.

7. Start a story with "Once Upon a Time...". Take turns adding on to the story. Have fun listening to your child use his/her imagination.

8. Talk to your kids. Have a nice conversation asking specific questions about their day or their dreams. You may have to prompt them. Ask about their favorite thing to do with Daddy, Mommy or Grandma. If they still won't talk to you, kids love to hear stories about when they were younger. Tell them about time when they spit up on a family friend and everyone laughed.

Public Invited to PCA Fayette Benefit Dinner, Tuesday, April 28at Four Seasons International Restaurant in Peachtree City, 5-9pm.

Fayette, GA - This April, Prevent Child Abuse Fayette (PCA), part of FACTOR (http://www.fayettefactor.org/) joins Prevent Child Abuse Georgia and Prevent Child Abuse America in raising awareness for child abuse prevention. PCA Fayette Coalition held a very important training on April 14, 2009 at Christ our Shepherd Lutheran Church for Mandated Reports and First Responders. The topic was not easy as it dealt with an issue we think will never happen to our children, our relative’s children, or anyone we know for that matter. But it does, all too often. The topic was child sexual abuse. 1 in 4 girls are molested by their 18th birthday; 1 in 6 boys are molested by their 18th birthday. Any child abuse, but especially sexual abuse, leaves wounds and scars for a lifetime. The training, Darkness to Light, helped us look at steps to better protecting our children and how to advocate for them.

The next PCA Fayette event will be a benefit dinner at the Four Seasons International Café, 114 Huddleston Rd., Peachtree City, GA 30269 on Tuesday, April 28 from 5-9pm. Many community leaders have graciously agreed to assist FACTOR/PCA Fayette in raising awareness and funds for our community Child Abuse Prevention coalition. The public is invited to enjoy a delicious meal that night served by the volunteer community leaders. They will be your waiter/waitress for the evening! All tips and donations will go to support the work of the coalition. UNICEF Offers Kids a Chance to Win a $5,000 Scholarship

I received an email from UNICEF today regarding a contest they are currently running for creative kids under the age of 14. It's an annual contest where children submit a greeting card design. The winning design is turned into an official UNICEF greeting card, sold exclusively at Pier 1 Imports stores across the country during the holiday season. See the 2008 winning picture on the right.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the cards sold at Pier 1 go to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to help in its mission to decrease the number of preventable childhood deaths from 25,000 each day to zero.

Upcoming Speedway Children’s Charities Kobalt Tools 500 Events

Atlanta Motor Speedway Chapter set to host Clay Shoot and Fast Talk

The Atlanta chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities will host two fundraising events preceding the Kobalt Tools 500 on March 8, the 2^nd Annual Clay Shoot on March 5 and the Fast Talk presented by AutoTrader.com at Club One on March 6.

The 2^nd Annual Clay Shoot will feature instruction from the USA Olympic Shooting team and 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Benson will be in attendance in addition to other NASCAR drivers and celebrities.

The SCC Clay Shoot will be hosted at the Cherokee Rose Sporting Resort in Griffin, just minutes from Atlanta Motor Speedway, and prizes will be awarded to the top-three finishers in each of three divisions. On-site registration begins at noon on Thursday, March 5 or you can register in advance online at www.speedwaycharities.org.

One night later, Fast Talk presented by AutoTrader.com will include dinner, drinks and a viewing of Georgia Power Qualifying Night from one of the most unique and luxurious seats in NASCAR, Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Club One. Many Schools Offering Georgia Pre-K Program Currently Accepting Registrations for 2009/2010 School Year

If you are the parent of a child who is 4 or almost 4, now is the time to start looking into options for Georgia's Pre-K program held at many schools and childcare centers in the state. Children who turn 4 years of age on September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010, whose parents are Georgia residents, are eligible to attend the Georgia Pre-K Program. Georgia Pre-K Program is voluntary for both families and communities.

Many public and private schools are currently accepting registrations for the free Georgia Pre-K program. It is a good idea to register at more than one school. Space is limited at each school and the demand is often high. The childcare centers typically offer Pre-K to current students and siblings first while public schools often give first priority to children who live within their zoning borders. Below I have a list of schools who offer the Georgia Pre-K in Fayette, Henry and Coweta counties with links to their sites where available.

It is important to find the school that is right for your child. Make sure you visit each school and get a level of comfort with the teachers and the classroom. I advise looking at the schools which are geographically closest to you first as bus service my not be available. Check the school's policies before you register. If you need after-care, it's important to know that not all schools offer after-care.

Decorated Canine Disc Throwing Performer, Gail Mirabella, Shares Insights and Wisdom on Dogs, Kids, & Doing the Work You Love

Gail Mirabella entertains audiences of all ages with her fast paced and fun act, “Dynamo Flying Dogs”. She is currently touring with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The circus will be appearing from February 13^th through 22^nd at Phillips Arena in Atlanta.

In 2005, Gail – who had also worked full time for many years in the pharmaceutical industry – decided to leave her “day job” to focus on her dogs and her love of everything having to do with them. In addition to her many public appearances, she has been much in demand to teach courses in agility, obedience, disc and flyball. Gail Mirabella has garnered regional titles in canine disc competitions throughout the United States, and has won the right to attend several world finals and founded the New England based Yankee Flyers Dog and Disc Club, of which she remains president.

Gail was a member of the Purina^® Incredible Dog Team for five years, traveling the country sharing her expertise, giving demonstrations and entertaining crowds at sporting events, festivals and fairs as well as on television’s Today Show, Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman.

Candace Robichaux, owner of LocalKidFun.com had the chance to talk with Gail recently. Surrounded by her 12 dogs, many of whom she rescued from shelters, Gail spoke candidly about how she made the leap to working with her dogs full-time, tips on travelling with dogs, why dogs are important for kids and some quick training tips you can use at home.

Q: A few years ago you left your corporate job to pursue your passion for your dogs full-time. What made you finally decide to leave the security of your job and go join the circus?

A: I had been doing agility training and working dogs for a long time on a part-time basis. I’m always stressed about leaving my dogs when I have to go to out for a short time. I wonder what they are up to. When my mom passed away 10 years ago, I realized that life is too short to be stuck behind a desk all day. With the emotional support of my family, I decided to finally do what makes me happy. My family supported me because they know once I put my mind to something I get it done. At first I was planning on opening a dog training facility. I set myself up financially when I left my job and knew I could always go back to the corporate world if I had to. When you do make that leap, you will look back and ask yourself why you didn’t do it sooner. My advice to others: figure out what you are passionate about, secure yourself financially, then take the leap into doing what you love. You will never regret giving it a try.

Q: You have been traveling with your dogs to many different cities on your tour with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Can you give us some tips on traveling with pets?

I am first and foremost a firm believer of safety with the dogs. I currently have 12 dogs. I purchased a large cargo van and a crate for each dog. The crates are secured to the walls of the van and to each other. I can’t stress strongly enough how important it is to secure dogs in a crate or seatbelt while in the car. I’ve had 5 friends who were in terrible car accidents with their dogs and the dogs were killed. One person had a fender bender and their dog was killed because it was on his lap and the airbag crushed it. You wouldn’t put your two year old in a car without securing them. You should do the same for your dogs. It’s not just for the dog’s safety. You wouldn’t want a 30-50 lb projectile flying forward and then back into a child that might be in the car. Also, don’t ever let your dog stick their head out the window. I was a vet tech for 7 years and can recall many animals coming in with eye injuries due to something flying into their eye or a branch slicing their eye open. Safety is number one.

Q: Dogs thrive on routine. How have you managed to keep them on a schedule during your travels?

My dogs still eat twice a day, at the same time every day. They get let out often. I have kennels set up in my trailer and the dogs get fed in their crates. I also set up a yard outside my trailer at each location. If it’s warm out, I leave the door to the trailer open and they can come in and out as they please. I am sitting on the couch in my trailer surrounded by dogs right now. The key to keeping the dogs happy is trust. Dogs don’t stress out if they trust their owner or handler. Also, having multiple dogs helps. They keep each other entertained.

Q: Have your dogs ever disobeyed your command or made a big mistake during a performance? How did you get them back on track?

A: I do agility and Frisbee in the show. It’s very high paced and high energy, if they make a mistake it’s usually a handling error. I train the dogs by the American standards of dog training - teach them basic obedience first then the tricks like Flyball, Frisbee, agility, etc. I typically use herding breeds and a couple rat terriers in the act. When they make a mistake, it’s not the dog. They are out to please you. Their reward is the fun, catching the Frisbee is the reward. Recently one of the dogs missed a Frisbee because he looked down at a carrot left by a previous act. I never have trouble getting them back on track because they love it so much. When they miss, it’s no big deal, but when they catch a Frisbee, the crowd goes wild. The dogs look like they are having a blast and they are.

Q: How do you recognize what mood your dogs are in?

A: I can just tell if they start looking around, their ears go down, their tails drop, etc. I may already know about something that stresses out a particular dog from practice. I have one dog who stops whenever she sees a shadow. I never get mad at them. I figure out what I can do to keep them from stressing. I build them up & build them up with positive reinforcement until they are ready. I rescued one dog who had very little human contact. She was a basket case and I took her on as sort of a project. Now she performs in front of thousands of people and the music and lights. It took a long time, but we developed a very strong bond. I make it lots of fun for the dogs and use lots of positive reinforcement, lots of treats. If they start stressing out, I back off on that trick and go back to something they feel more comfortable with. One time I put a dog out there that just wasn’t ready, but I needed him as a backup. He didn’t perform all the tricks well, but he was out there jumping around and having fun and the crowd went wild anyway.

Q: Besides your dogs, what is your favorite animal or act performing in the circus?

I love the elephants. They are majestic, huge and able do things that you wouldn’t imagine like sitting upright on their hind legs. A neat trick they do during the act is when a couple of elephants lay down and smaller ones slide down them. It’s a lot of fun to watch and you can tell the elephants are happy, with their ears flapping. Backstage the elephants are calm and cool and each has its own personality. They are very intelligent. Sometimes I work with the elephant handlers to try to teach one of them to catch a Frisbee. There’s one who can catch a stick with his trunk. It would be cool to someday have the elephant throw a Frisbee and a dog catch it.

Q: My dog takes off every time we let her off the leash or gets out of the fenced back yard. What is your advice for handling this situation and what tips can you give other people when training their dog?

A: With this problem, I would go into a fenced area and begin working with your dog on recall. If you always use the word “come”, change it to something else. I use the word “here”, it sounds a lot more pleasant and higher pitched. A dog shouldn’t come on its name. Dogs should always look at you on its name. For example, call “Jake”, when the dog looks at you then throw a treat. If the dog crosses a busy street and you call their name you don’t want them running back across the street to you. Their name should cause them to pause, look at you and wait for the next command. For your treats, use something good like a piece of turkey hot dog or cut up string cheese. All positive reinforcement is the key. Then when you’re not in the fenced in area use a flexi lead and let them roam as far as they want. Then call their name and say “here”. When they come to you give them a treat. Eventually this may teach them to stay with you and listen to your recall commands. If they do take off, the best thing you can do is run in the opposite direction. Otherwise, it becomes a game for them and they think they have the pack following them.

Q: You entered your first junior dog competition when you were 10 years old. Why do you think dogs are so important to kids?

A: Dogs offer a bond. I had lots of friends, but there was something special about the bond with my dog that couldn’t be replaced. It made me mature and really helped with my self-esteem through my teenage years. I was seeing a psychologist when I was young because I had very low self esteem. The psychologist actually told my parents to buy me a dog of my own instead of just the family dog. For my 14th birthday I got a wolf hybrid named Timber. He lived for 14 years and even went to college with me. I had someone to talk to and cry to, someone always with me. It gave me self-worth, something relying on your for friendship. They are always happy to see you, never make fun of you, no matter what your hair looks like or if you have ugly shoes, the dog doesn’t care. Having a pet can give kids some direction. Another option is the local 4H clubs. Some 4H clubs have competitions at agriculture or state fairs. When I was doing Frisbee shows with my dogs independently at state fairs, I loved to see the 4H competitions. There would be a young child with a chicken that he groomed and trained. The pride in the child’s face was priceless.

Bargain Hunters: How will the CPSIA Law requiring lead testing for children’s products affect YOU beginning February 10, 2009?

There has been a lot of circulating information over the past few days about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act that will go into effect nationwide February 10, 2009. For those of you not familiar with the hype, let me help you get back up to speed. ALL items intended for children under 12 are to be tested for stricter levels of lead and other contaminates, even if the item is intended for adults but can be regarded as "kid's stuff" such as comics, games, stuffed toys, etc. This will certainly drive up the costs of children’s products across the board and many specialty businesses will go under due to the high cost of testing. Personally, I'm glad the government wants to make our children safer and healthier, but they took it a little too far when the Act never considered, included or excluded second hand resellers. Here are the regulations in a nutshell...

Manufacturers, importers and retailers are expected to comply with new Congressionally-mandated laws. Starting on February 10, 2009, children's products cannot be sold if they contain more than 600 parts per million (ppm) total lead. Certain children's products manufactured on or after February 10, 2009 cannot be sold if they contain more that 0.1% of certain specific phthalates or if they fail to meet new mandatory standards for toys. Under the new law, children's products with more than 600 ppm total lead cannot lawfully be sold in the United States on or after February 10, 2009, even if they were manufactured before that date. The total lead limit drops to 300 ppm on August 14, 2009. The new law requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children's products made after February 10 meet all the new safety standards and the lead ban.

So what does this mean for Second hand re-sellers like church yard sales, individual yard sales, consignment shops, and seasonal consignment sales? Well for a couple of days we were all in a tizzy. Those of us that were even informed about the law knew that it COULD be interpreted INCORRECTLY and POTENTIALLY make our honest and economy friendly business an illegal one overnight? Second hand resellers certainly do not have the funds to test merchandise since testing can go well into the thousands of dollars per unit.

Luckily, the consignment community got involved and stood up for what was needed. ALOT of phone calls and emails were sent to the authors of the bill at Senator Pryor's office as well as contacting other House and Senate Representatives across the Nation. A big thanks to John Wasson of My Sale Manager, a nationwide seasonal consignment sale computer program company, who helped coordinate and rally for clarification on this hastily put together congressional act.

Today, a press release by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) clarified what we've all been anxiously awaiting regarding second hand businesses. “The new law requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children's products made after February 10 meet all the new safety standards and the lead ban. Sellers of used children's products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, are not required to certify that those products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards. The new safety law does not require resellers to test children's products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children's products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties.”

So fear not bargain hunters, it is not illegal to have children's items in yard sales, consignment shops, seasonal consignment sales or thrift stores. However, our children's safety is first and foremost so we all need to pay more attention to new laws, abide by recall listings and be more aware of items that are likely to have lead content. Shoppers and consignors who experience the thrill of Tykes, Tots & Teens 30,000 sq feet, Seasonal Consignment Sale at the GA International Horse Park will have easy access to CPSC recall lists to verify that items are not on the list this April.

Is It "Bye, Bye" to Bratz Dolls?

After a 4 year court battle between MGA, the Bratz makers and Mattel, Inc. who make Barbie, MGA has been ordered by a judge to stop all production of the Bratz dolls and pull them from the shelves after Christmas. I think I read somewhere they'll be pulled in February, but I can't find the source of that information. According to the article I read which quotes court records, Mattel had been investigating MGA and its executives for years due to declining Barbie sales ever since the Bratz dolls appeared in 2001. A 4 year legal battle ensued with both companies filing claims. Recently, a jury found in favor of Mattel that designer of the Bratz dolls, Carter Bryant developed and marketed the dolls to a competitor (MGA) while still working for Mattel. Maybe, like me, you didn't know or care that there was a battle brewing in the land of dolls. Let's face it, many of us have bigger things to worry about in our personal lives than the fate of a line of dolls. However, I for one will not be sad to see them go away. I'm not a big fan. Also, it will end the battle in my house between my 6 year old daughter and me. She has been asking why she can't have Bratz dolls for a couple of years. My daughter even came home recently with a list of friends who are allowed to have Bratz while she is not. So I don't get in trouble here, I don't think Bratz dolls are evil. I just don't like the name, the way they dress, etc. And, my daughter has never been that much into any dolls so why should I waste money on something she'll only play with to impress her friends. I gave in on the Webkinz, actually her Nana bought it for her when I wasn't around. Still she has a couple of them now that we bought her. I put my foot down on those Bratz dolls though. There are plenty of other dolls out there. She actually has some of the Soda Pop girls which are made by the same manufacturer of Bratz. They have the big almond shaped eyes like the Bratz dolls, but are dressed in cutesy clothes and come with a pet. We were just playing with those this afternoon.

There is a chance that Mattel will keep the Bratz dolls on the shelf by producing it themselves. I hope that the next time we see the Bratz dolls will be in about 20 years on VH1's show, "I Love the New Millenium", or whatever they will call it. My niece and I were hysterical watching the "I Love the 80's" and "I Love the 90's" shows on VH1 this past summer. The show has modern comedians spoofing the fads, toys, sayings, etc. of the time period. Some of it was really funny.

Those of us who lived through the disappearance of our beloved Smurfs will be able to put this in perspective. Maybe the Bratz dolls will become collectors items, or maybe not.

The Fayette YMCA Could Expand if SPLOST Renewed

I recently received an email asking concerned citizens of Fayette County to write to the Fayette County Board of Commissioners urging them to include a community center/YMCA (including an aquatic venue, gym, wellness, teen, arts center, etc.) in the SPLOST renewal ballot next November.

After reading the email and doing a bit more research about the SPLOST, I do intend to write a letter to the commissioners asking for a community center in the SPLOST renewal ballot. Developing and maintaining the http://www.localkidfun.com website for the last year has biased me towards support of enhancing the community opportunities for children and families. Although Fayette County already has a lot to offer, a YMCA with indoor facilities could increase the recreational opportunities in Fayette County providing even more options. I am not stating here whether I will vote for or against the SPLOST renewal in November 2009. My vote will depend on what projects the SPLOST actually will include. The Fayette County Commissioners are currently planning the projects which they intend to include in the SPLOST renewal ballot next November. A letter from many of their constituents will help guide their planning.

Fayetteville Police Officers Host “Christmas with the Police”

The Fayetteville Police Department will be conducting a “Christmas with the Police” event this holiday season. The Fayetteville Police Department will select families that may not be able to have Christmas otherwise, to celebrate the holidays with. Officers of the police department will meet with family members to get gift ideas. They will then shop for gifts for the families. Members of the Department and the families will have Christmas dinner, open presents and go to Dixie Land Amusement Park.
The Fayetteville Police Department has been conducting a similar program for the past five years. In the past events we found many of the kids bought not just for themselves but for their parents and siblings.

Stuffed Pumpkin Recipe for an Easy Fall Dinner!

Here is a recipe I make every year for family and friends. I got it from my friend Sandy F. when we lived in Jacksonville, FL. It was a family recipe from growing up Rhode Island. Her family made every year to celebrate Fall. I thought I would share this with all of you.

It makes lots of food and it's easy to put together. Put it together early then pop it in the oven for at least an hour (sometimes 2 hrs). Invite your neighbors over and let the kids play outside in this gorgeous October weather while the pumpkin cooks. It makes your house smell yummy. I've made it twice already this fall for two different groups of friends. The leftovers are good too.

TIP: If you are inviting over picky eaters, reserve some extra ground meat for hamburgers to cook on the grill.

Stuffed Pumpkin Recipe
Ingredients:
Pumpkin - Buy a pumpkin at the grocery store or at a pumpkin patch. Look for a good size that will fit in your oven with the stem (usually medium size works).
1 med Onion
2 lb ground turkey OR 1 lb ground pork & 1 lb ground beef
1 Cup Chopped Celery (optional)
1 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Pepper
1 Tbsp Poultry Seasoning
1/2 tsp Ground Cloves
1 Cup Plain Bread Crumbs

Directions:
Cut the top off the pumpkin and reserve. Scoop out the seeds and veins of pumpkin (like you would to carve it).
Precook in microwave 5-10 minutes until it starts to soften (this helps reduce the oven time)

Fry 1 chopped onion until brown
add ground meat and cook until brown
add 1 cup water (reduce water w/ reduced meat)& 1 cup chopped celery (optional). Cook until celery is done. Remove from heat.

Add 1 T. poultry seasoning, 1/2 tsp ground cloves, & 1 C bread crumbs. Mix.

Once cool, stuff mixture into pumpkin. Place top on pumpkin and put it on a foil covered cookie sheet to prevent dripping.
Bake at 350 degrees until done (1-2 hours). Done when pumpkin is brown and very soft.
Serve in pumpkin or in serving bowls. For serving bowls, scoop out the meat into one dish and the flesh of the pumpkin into another. Serve also with rice (our preference), mashed potatoes, or any vegetable.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

My kids and I are planning to Trick or Treat for UNICEF this year. My husband and I both collected for UNICEF as children. We want to pass this giving spirit onto our children. I've ordered a few of the orange UNICEF boxes for my kids and the neighborhood kids so that they can participate too.

My family is heading up to Connecticut this weekend. We'll be going to our favorite pumpkin patch in CT, Jones Family Farms. If I didn't already know about this farm though, I'd check the Pumpkin Patch site. Just in case, I did check and Jones Farm is listed 2nd on the CT page.

Enjoy Family Friendly Theater in Your Community

I have always been enthralled with live theater and hope to pass that love onto my children. After starting LocalKidFun.com I discovered a hidden gem right here in our community that has allowed me to enjoy some wonderful shows with my children. The discovery of Fayette-Coweta Family Theatre, Inc. under the direction of Tammy Barton was like finding a gold mine in my own back yard. FCFT offers 6 family friendly shows per season held in various venues throughout the community. They also offer workshops, production camps and weekly acting classes for aspiring youth ages 5 -18.

The first show I saw was a small production put on by the students of a six week work shop. The show was free. The theatre was mostly filled with family members of the actors. For many of the children, this was their first experience in performing live in front of an audience. I honestly wasn’t expecting much, but thought my kids might enjoy this particular “kid show”. As it turned out, I was blown away by the junior musical and the talent showcased. I watched one little girl struggle a little bit with her nerves as she spoke in the first scene, only to hear her belt out the most beautiful song solo at the end. Her performance of that song put tears in my eyes. The show was incredible.

The next FCFT performance I attended was “School House Rock”, a part of their “A Company of Friends Educational Production”, the professional troupe. Again, I was impressed. For less than the price of a movie, we had a wonderful family bonding moment that continues as we still sing the songs from that show.

Besides pure enjoyment and affordable family entertainment, exposing your children to the arts can be a positive influence in their lives. Plays are like books coming to life. The audience gets to experience the story using all senses and feels a part of the excitement and unfolding drama. Attending theatre with your child may also inspire them to have the courage to try something new. Acting for the love of playing characters can give a child confidence and an inner strength that they will carry with them throughout their lives. According an article for Scholastic called “Supporting the Arts: Why it’s important to connect to the creative side of school.” by Carol Pitterman, there are 3 benefits of drama class:

Sharpens sense of plot, setting, and characters — all integral aspects of being a good reader, too!
Improvisation is fun and allows a chance to act silly in school.
Flexes memory muscles when it's time to remember lines.

The article suggests you can give your child a head start with acting skills such as confidence and character voice development by reading aloud together.

Children's Consignment Sales

It's time for many Seasonal Children's Consignment Sales. Consignment Sales are typically for one weekend only. They are a great place to shop for Fall/Winter clothing, find Halloween Costumes, get a head start on Christmas shopping, etc.

Starting this weekend, August 23, 2008 and continuing through mid-September, many seasonal consignment sales will take place. If you have never shopped consignment, now may be the perfect time to try one out. We could all use a little extra cash in our pocket these days. Whether you're selling your items at the sale or buying clothes and toys for your kids at a fraction of their original cost, Seasonal Consignment Sales can help keep your wallet nice and thick. Kids grow out of their clothes and toys with the blink of an eye. Selling the clothes and toys that are clean and look almost unused is a great way to keep clutter out and make money for the new items your children will need. Most sales offer sellers and volunteers a preview shopping day. Often, the best items are sold in these preview days to other sellers who now need to replenish their growing child's wardrobe. Check each sale's website link or contact them to find out how to become a seller.

For shoppers, I found some great tips for consignment sale "newbies" at http://www.kidsconsignmentsales.com/sresources.htm. They give some clever ideas on how to best shop for clothes that will fit your child. This is important because sizes vary by brand and some clothing shrinks in the wash. They also recommend leaving children at home while you shop consigment. Great idea because these sales can get crowded and it is hard to keep an eye on wandering little ones while you shop. Many sales ask you to leave strollers at home.

One tip I would add is to make a list of what you need before you leave your house. These sales are often held in large venues and there are many items for sale. You can easily get overwhelmed and impulse shop. I learned that the hard way. I felt great one time leaving a sale because I found a bunch of adorable and inexpensive shirts for my child. The problem was, my child already had a lot of shirts in that size. The shirt drawer ended up being over-stuffed and I didn't have many pants, shorts, etc. that matched the shirts.

"Imagination Movers" - New Show on Playhouse Disney

For the preschool group and their parents who may be looking for ways to entertain them now that the big kids are back in school, here is a little something. "Imagination Movers" will be premiering on Playhouse Disney at 10am/9am (central) on Saturday, Sept. 6th.

Kids are probably already familiar with the blue cover-all clad singing group from their videos that have been showing between shows on Playhouse Disney for a couple of years. The Imagination Mover's website explains the show will feature music performances, stories and skits. The skits and stories are designed to teach children problem solving skills. The band members will work hard to solve "idea emergencies" by brainstorming. They hope that brainstorming will become a part of your child's vocabulary. You can also download coloring pages and play online games at the For Kids section their site. The Playhouse Disney website also has "Imagination Movers" coloring pages and music videos. I personally liked the ones on Imagination Movers better.

If you want to hear a little bit about the background of Imagination Movers and about New Orleans where the show is being filmed, listen to the MommyCast podcast about their visit to the set of "Imagination Movers". Paige and Gretchen, hosts of MommyCast, tell how the band members of Imagination Movers felt there was a hole left in children's educational TV when Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo passed. Back to School, Back to Work & Work from Home Tips.

For those of us who are lucky enough to have summers off, back to school also means back to work. Even if you are a full-time stay at home mom, back to school might mean volunteering at your child's school or working on some house projects you've been putting off all summer. I don't really have summers off from my home based business, LocalKidFun.com, but I did spend lots of time with the kids this summer so back to school means back to work for me too.

As much as I am looking forward to getting back to having more uninterrupted hours to work at home, I am also reminded that sometimes working from home can be lonely. Many people think working from home is a dream. It does have it's benefits, like being able to work in pajamas or in stinky work-out clothes, no commute, you can wash several loads of laundry while you work, etc. The main negative for me is the lack of human interaction. Even when I had a job where I talked to people all day on the phone, I missed having co-workers to chat with while getting coffee. You have no one patting you on the back and telling you what a great job you are doing. Many times you have to work twice as hard as people in the office just to prove that you are not slacking off at home.

If you think you would enjoy working alone and can be self-motivated, you still have to make sure that the actual work is right for you and your family situation. I once had a work from home job that wasn't a good fit because of the hours. In that job, I found my phone was ringing off the hook from people returning my calls while I was making dinner or helping the kids with homework. Spousal support was key in that situation, but eventually I ended up leaving that job for something that was less disruptive to my family.

While not every work from home job is a dream. I have learned several tips from my almost 7 years of working from home that may make it easier for you if you are considering that path. Please feel free to add more tips to the comments if you have them for the many people considering work from home situations.

Tip 1: Don't work near the kitchen. I actually just learned that one when I found out I gained a bunch of weight in the last year since I started LocalKidFun.com. Snacking is a big form of procrastination for me, so I need to put my work space as far away from the kitchen as possible. My husband works from our only home office so I have set up a desk in the corner of another room to keep myself away from the kitchen.

Tip 2: Know where you can find a reliable WiFi hotspot. My husband and I have both worked from our local library or a coffee shop when we just needed to get out of the house.

Tip 3: Set goals and write them down. It was easier to work from home when I had a boss or a team that made me accountable on those days where it's hard to be self motivated. Now that I don't have a boss to answer to, I hold myself accountable to my goals and give myself little rewards for reaching them. (Just don't make the rewards food related or you won't fit into your street clothes when you do leave the house.)

Tip 4: Make sure you have your own computer. I prefer my laptop, but a desktop is OK too. Just keep it away from the kids.

Tip 5: Keep a structured and reliable work schedule and communicate that schedule with family. If you do have to work outside of your normal work hours, make sure you're kids and family are aware of the change in advance so you won't get unexpected interruptions from them.

Mamma Mia!

I went to see Mamma Mia! the movie with some girlfriends last night. About a quarter of the way through the movie, I couldn't get out of my head that this was High School Musical for middle aged women. I wouldn't show it to my kids because there are too many adult themes running through the plot. In the end though, I really enjoyed it. I have always been a sucker for musicals and can easily get lost in them. I laughed, I cried, etc.

I am embarrassed to admit that I had heard nothing of this film or the actual musical production that opened in London in 1999 before my friends suggested a "girl's night out" to see it. Today, I went to the official Mamma Mia! movie website and the official ABBA site. The ABBA site has an article that describes the process of making the musical into a movie. The beginning of the article states, "Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past ten years, it’s highly unlikely you’re not familiar with the global success story that is Mamma Mia!". I guess living under a rock perfectly describes me. My first child was born in 2000 and my second in 2002. Since then, my view of pop culture has been through the eyes of small children. I can discuss the finer points of Transformers & Lego Star Wars all day and of course I can sing every lyric to the songs of both the High School Musical movies. But, I digress. This is supposed to be a posting about Mamma Mia!. I can discuss the complete and total loss of coolness I experienced when becoming a stay at home mom in another post.

Overall, I thought Mamma Mia! was a fun and entertaining movie. It is not for everyone. There were a few groups of people who walked out during the middle of the movie. I don't think I've ever done walked out on a movie, although I wanted to when my youth group went to see Chariots of Fire back in 1981. Also, I recently fell asleep when I took the kids to see WALL-E (they enjoyed that movie, I found it a bit slow to get going). I probably go to the movies less than the average person. In the past 10 years I have been stuck in a Kid Movie or "Super Hero" movie rut. My husband loves the "Super Hero" movies. It was fun to see this movie with friends. I loved the music by ABBA even though I've never considered myself an ABBA fan before. I could see myself in the character of "Donna" someday in the future when my now 5 year old daughter gets married. I know that my sister and I will do our best to embarrass her by singing all of the songs we used to sing on the long car trips with our parents. We loved to string commercials together and even made up a song or two of our own. Later, we graduated to singing Rick Springfield songs. (Only 8 more days until I get to see Rick Springfield live in Peachtree City, GA at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. I can't contain my excitement!)

Even though my entire family never hesitates to tell me what a terrible singer I am, I have always loved music. We are passing that pure joy of 1980's music to our children with Friday Night Dance Parties at the Robichauxs'. We don't do this every Friday night anymore, but I may have to start it up again after seeing Mamma Mia!. The kids are getting a little heavy to be our human guitars, but I think they are still young enough to dance around the house like idiots with us.

So, if you go see Mamma Mia!, I would recommend leaving the hubby and kids at home. But when you get home, dance around the house with them and have some fun while you remember your youth and pretend to be cool again.

This is my very first blog. Finally! My husband has been blogging for at least 6 years so I really have no excuse for waiting so long.

I guess the best way to start your blog is to tell people what you will be writing about. This blog will contain updates about me and my family which may not be that interesting to people, but I'll try to keep it interesting and real. I also may have some information related to LocalKidFun.com, although this is not a commercial for any of the business or places listed on there. (sign up for LKF's newsletter if you want to see things only related to LocalKidFun.com) I'm also a bit of a nerd about careers, finding work, resumes etc. since I used to be a recruiter. I try to keep up with the latest trends in that area and may pass some of that along.
